Funko POP: Spider-Gwen (Spiderverse)

A Spider-Gwen POP? Yes, that's right! I was initially going to pass on this, but the more I dealt with the older Spider-Gwen POP, the more I realized it was time for an update. Yes, update-replace the older one. So is this a worthy substitute? Let's find out then, shall we?

There's only one more from this set that I would like to get which is Spider-Man 2099. The rest are an easy pass. Though if I find Spider-Man India on sale I might.

She's a bobblehead!

So how is this Spider-Gwen different from the other POPs that I got of her? Well, the comparison is coming up but I will say that as a Spider-person, Gwen over here doesn't have a whole lot of action-style pose, doesn't she? She's got the base for such dynamic posing but she's not doing what a spider does, right? As I have stated in a few of my reviews of Spider-Folks, sometimes a less acrobatic pose is necessary to show a character's design and for the sake of the POP, it allows us to see the little details and work that Funko has put into it. While there aren't a lot of intricates that comes with Gwen's costume, I do like the sculpting done on her chucks. From the laces to the ankle cut-offs, the work done on her footwear gives a good illusion of miniature shoes. Everything else, like her proportion (stylized notwithstanding) and hand gestures, are all done quite well. I have no real complaints.

The base is appreciated even though it's not necessary for this case. I feel that the base with the plastic pegs for a character's body belongs to aerial-like POPs. But again, it will keep Gwen's feet from warping forward.

The color is pretty clean. Spider-Gwen is pretty tame when it comes to her colors--odd and unique color combination, yes, but she doesn't have a lot going on. She has a simple design and this POP conveys it. The pink stands out against the black and white but is not obtrusive. The teal color of her shoes is present but the webbing all over her arms and hood is a bit more discreet but they're there. This paint and color department is a win.

And here is POP: Spider-Gwen (across the Spiderverse) next to some other POP Gwens that I own. I swear, Gwen's popularity is so recent that the fact that she's gotten this much merchandise is crazy.

Here is the most recent Spider-Gwen POP next to the older one from 2016. One can see the age of the older one, eh? Animated /cinematic version next to her original comic book counterpart. The older one has some faults like the weight of the head causes her feet to warp her forward and it doesn't have a lot of sculpting to make it stand out. But I will say that the paint job still holds up. I like the 'paintbrush' look of her eyes. Not sure if I like the cleaner outline of the new one or the original look.

Is this a good substitute? Yes, it is. A must? For any hardcore Spider-Gwen fans, yes it is. Though keep in mind that pose-wise, she didn't evolve or is doing anything crazy though it stands as a good POP on its own.

Until Next Time!
