Yes, June was filled with some successful #POP catches! Red Sonja is part of that said catch. Let's review this hott redheaded warrior in her glorious POP form!
Red Sonja is one of those comic book gals who thrived in her era. She was a bad ass-take no prisoner female warrior who had that fiery long red hair and questionable attire for someone who is constantly getting hacked and slashed at. But seriously, she was Red Sonja. The She-Devil. She can wear whatever she wants and survive--and she did--at least until after the 90s and the climate changed. Anyways, this POP version of her pays full homage to her previous untarnished look. Full-on chainmail bikini with leather boots and all! It's what Red Sonja is known for and for #Funko to keep that interaction, I do respect them and I really wanted to have this! So loyal to the sexy look? Funko, I'm in!
So Red Sonja is a one-off for this series. Shame. We could have had more Sonja poses--or maybe have her in POP pose as that box art shows. But I shouldn't complain. We get a Red Sonja as she should be in POP form!
- nothing, well, it's highly appreciated. The chainmail on her chest piece and loincloth all have the 'scaly' look. The straps are all sculpted in and her boots and gloves have the right look to give her that rugged, warrior woman, vagabond look. Red Sonja's sword is also well done and from the times I have seen her in action, her sword has always been simple and relatively consistent. I'm glad they added her scabbard too, something that I feel is easily missed by some companies when representing a weapon-wielding character who has their weapon drawn out. I know, just the little things impress me.
When Funko goes for a sexy character, it's often hard to consider the appeal as a big factor since their toy line is all about stylized anatomy. But when they go for the details they are known for with someone like Red Sonja who wears -practically- nothing, well, it's highly appreciated. The chainmail on her chest piece and loincloth all have the 'scaly' look. The straps are all sculpted in and her boots and gloves have the right look to give her that rugged, warrior woman, vagabond look. Red Sonja's pose is nothing dynamic or super impressive. Sonja is holding her blade in a semi-sexy pose and most likely throwing off her unknown assailants with her sex appeal and the fact that she knows how to use the blade. Again, not a very dynamic pose but from what I know of the character, Funko picked the right pose. Looks 'right'.
The color on Red Sonja is done pretty well. The hair is an almost flawless replica of her comic book counterpart and the colors chosen for her .... 'armor', really compliments the show of different texture from leather to metal. The skin could be a little bit more tanned but depending on the comic book and the artist, Red Sonja can be light-skinned to tanned so I'm not going to complain about that.
At the end of the day, I do like this #POP. It's faithful to Sonja's original attire, it's a simple but effective pose, and yes, I do like the character and what she represents. Her POP is fantastic in all senses that POP can do--while safe and nothing grand, it still does what I want out of a POP. I do recommend her and if we get another version of her, with something a bit more dynamic, I'm sure I'll bend. As long we can stay within this time frame of Sonja, I'll get another POP of her!
Until Next Time!
