We had a break from POPs for a bit there, didn't we? Well, there's no rest for the wicked! It's back to collecting! This time around we're digging deep into nostalgia as we have TMNT in their classic form action figure form! Should be good and very nostalgic! Let's get into the review, shall we?
Paying homage to the Turtles' humble beginnings! For those who were around during the early 90s, this style for the TMNT was for the kids playing with these toys by Playmates. I'll talk about their design more when looking at the POP but it makes me happy that this style is making a round!
I want to point out that the pose is enough to make me scream classic Leonardo! I remember those classic toys--well, I remember Leo well since it was the only one I got. I was the kid who didn't want to get other Turtles because I liked Leonardo too much. And that first TMNT figure from Playmate started all that. The simple design of the toy, the angry expression with the missing paint on one side of his mouth, and then the weapons with that odd brown-red color. Along with the Turtles' classic weapons, they all get a whole set of Shinobi weapons. I'm glad this POP echoes the classic toy. The sculpt of the POP, and the proportions, though stylized, still really look like the classic toy. I love the well-sculpted belt straps that cross in front of his chest and hold the sheathe for his katanas (which were functional sayas in the playmates' version). The blue straps on his elbows, wrists, and knees all have details, the shell, and, of course, can't forget that angry grin complete with the clear eyes to intimidate. It's a well-done POP, for sure.
The colors are spot on! Other than the odd paint blemish on his headband, which is small and hardly something I noticed, but know that mine came with it. But I want to give attention to Leo's katanas which are colored to replicate the original color of Playmates' version. The skin color is vibrant and cleanly done. The shell, the chest, and all the colors are done well. I'm impressed.
It's no surprise that I like this POP from the way I talked about it. It is, however, not my POP and it's my friend's. I'm sure she's going to enjoy this one quite a bit. We're also planning to collect all the brothers eventually! But I am impressed with what Funko and if the rest of the other turtles are as good as Leo, I'm sure it's another home run set.
Until Next Time!
