Ame-Comi: Batgirl & Variant

Writer's picture: OnyxOnyx

Let's review another Ame-Comi! For this review, it's not just ONE Ame-Comi but TWO! Yes, I managed to snag both variations of Ame-Comi Batgirl! Let's check them out, shall we?

As I mentioned, I do like the designs of the box. I also like how they are advertising the Catwoman and her variant! I might have one of them.

Okay so let's start with 'standard' Batgirl. The design of Barbara's Ame-Comi suit isn't too far from her original. It's got more exaggerations like the way her cape and cowl are designed--her mask is more of a helmet than a traditional mask. She's got more blue and gold accents to her gray bodysuit, which aren't just color contrasts but are also layered designs so I'm all for it. I love how her gloves and boots look like protection, sculpted to look like metal of some sort. The way her cape flows along with her hair looks pretty good, and organic. But it's odd how they're both going in different directions. Overall, the way the sculpting was done for Batgirl is pretty good, especially for the time these figurines came out.

The pose isn't exactly something I'd say is loyal to Batgirl's presence. While she's not dark and brooding like Bruce, she does still try to stick to the shadows. The Ame-Comi version, however, is a bit more flaunting and the pose says "I'm here!".

I like the coloring a lot. I love the blue used and it looks its best on the cape; love how the organic shadowing from light adds more depth to it. They did that fluorescent tips that Bishoujo used to do and I wouldn't say Ame-Comi did it just as well but they pulled it off. Everything else like the grey suit, is good and I do enjoy how the gold and blue works with it. I also appreciate the red outlines, especially on the bat logo.

She's got some exaggerated features, for sure.
She's got some exaggerated features, for sure.

The face shape, the nose placement, and the eyes don't look as smooth up close as it does far away. The paint defects are also more apparent when looking up close.

Still, there are some nice details like on her utility belt and I do enjoy how they sculpted her cape!

I wonder what warrants that pouch to be painted in red? I love how Batgirl's holding her batarang but I wouldn't have minded if they did more of a pose that has something to do with her throwing her weapon.

The variant is almost the same figurine but with a darker coat of color. The pose, the expression, all of it is the same. No need to go into those details again.

For some reason, the stands aren't the same between the original and the variant. The original is a large, sphere, which did its job. The variant has an oblong shape, smaller, and far more in line with what we see with Batman's logo. While the variant has more ground space for display, for this version, there is another piece that helps Batgirl stand. Something I seem to be missing.... which is why this picture was harder than it should have been.

The colors are the selling point of the variant. While the 'original' is more in line with the classic blue and grey, this version is black and yellow. I honestly can't say if this is better but I'm not going to say it's worse. I do like the darker tone but it feels like it lost some of that vibrant variety that came with the blue and grey. Still, the quality remained the same--for better or for worse.

That red pouch stayed the same!

Still slim, posed with an exaggerated flaunt, and the suit details present, with all that standing, I don't have much to say against this version.

I'm aware. She's very dusty.

The silver zipper is the same color between this version and her original. All the neat design qualities are intact. The cape did lose some of that color detail the original had, but I'm all for it.

I'm not sure if there is a huge push from me for these two to be a must. They're pretty good for what they are but for me, they're past their time. Their pose isn't my favorite for a Batgirl and the original version's stand is a bit too big and takes up a lot of space. For any hardcore Batgirl fans, this might be a neat addition. For me, it's not a full thumbs up of recommendation for sure. But I am glad to say that I have them!

Until Next Time!
